Dog Adoption Fee: $150.00

Due to increasing medical costs we have found it necessary to increase our adoption fees.  These fees help to offset the costs we incur in readying an animal for adoption but often do not cover all the care and medical costs.   Here's a chart that shows you what it could cost you to adopt a 'free to a good home' dog.

Prior to adoption, all of our dogs will be either spayed or neutered, vaccinated for rabies, distemper, parvo and kennel cough, treated for fleas and parasites, tested for heartworm and micro chipped.

While dogs are in our care they will be on a flea preventative and all dogs tested negative for heartworm will be put on a heartworm preventative . Other medical issues will be addressed on an individual basis.

FEATURED DOG: Rocky, 6 months old - Coon Hound

Luna

My name is Rocky I came to the shelter last November with my brother and sister.  We were all thin and scared, but we grew into handsome coonhound mix pups.  My brother and sister have found great homes, but I’m still here.

I’m very smart (I was the second one to learn how to sit!) and have a great time playing with my toys.  What I would really like is someone to play with me and teach me lots of new things in a loving home.

I discovered snow this winter and had a blast chasing a ball into the snow and finding it…usually by sticking my whole head in to see where it went.  Spring is coming and I would love to explore all the new sights and smells with a my own family.  Stop by and visit me and let’s start the adventure together!

Rocky is neutered, vaccinated for rabies, distemper, parvo and kennel cough. He was treated for fleas and worms, tested negative for heartworm and is on heartworm preventative and is microchipped.

You can meet him at the Schuyler County Humane Society in Watkins Glen during public hours on Saturday from 10am – 1 pm or call us at 607-594-2255 to schedule an appointment

The Adoption Fee of $150 includes spay/neuter, rabies, DHPP and kennel cough vaccinations, worming, flea treatment, heartworm testing, heartworm preventative, microchipping and one year's registration fee.

Please contact us if you'd like to meet Luna.

Dog Adoption Policies

Same Day Adoptions

We want to do all we can to ensure that you and your new pet are made for each other.  Therefore, the HSSC recommends  24 hour waiting period from time you decide to adopt a dog to the time you take the dog home.  This encourages a sound decision on the part of the adopter and discourages impulse adoptions.  The decision to adopt a homeless animal is a lifelong commitment. It is up to the discretion of the adoption counselor to allow same day adoptions.

Adoption Fee

The adoption fee of $150 is due at the time of adoption in the form of cash or check. Check is made payable to HSSC. The adoption helps to offset the costs of rabies, distemper and kennel cough vaccinations, deworming, spay/neuter surgery, treatment for fleas, heartworm testing, heartworm treatment (depending on the time of year), microchipping and the first year of microchip registration. The costs for additional medical care if required are also covered by this fee. In the rare instance that an animal is not spayed or neutered, a refundable spay/neuter deposit of $35 will be collected at the time of adoption.  This money will be returned to the adopter after proof of sterilization has been reviewed by the HSSC.

Return Policy

Our goal is to find permanent, loving homes for the animals in our care.  However, animals and humans do not mix for a variety of reasons.  We will facilitate identifying a more suitable animal for the adopter and find a more suitable home for the animal, should the initial adoption not be successful.  An animal who has been adopted from the HSSC will be accepted back into the adoption program at the discretion of the HSSC .  Adopters returning an animal are encouraged to adopt another animal in lieu of the one being returned. Should the adopter not wish to adopt another animal a partial refund of 50% will be available to the adopter to encourage return of the animal to the care of the HSSC.  Full refund will be considered on a case by case basis.
