Founded in 1987, The Humane Society of Schuyler County is an all volunteer 501c3 not for profit organization dedicated to improving the welfare of animals in Schuyler County. Our mission is to eliminate pet overpopulation, prevent cruelty to animals, provide quality care for homeless animals, promote responsible pet ownership, and help the community to develop humane principles toward all animals.

To address this mission we offer a low-cost spay/neuter service for the dogs and cats of eligible area residents and provide spay/neuter certificates for use at participating veterinarians.  County residents meeting income requirements and residents with feral cat populations are provided the opportunity to bring dogs and cats to the low cost spay/neuter clinics offered twice monthly. We firmly believe that spay/neuter is the most effective means of reducing the problem of pet over population.

We also provide pet food and shelter for animals in need, maintain a small medical emergency loan fund and provide annual free rabies clinics.

The Humane Society operates a foster network to care for homeless cats and kittens as space allows. Adoptable cats and kittens can be seen at PetSmart in Ithaca and Horseheads, by calling us at 546-7710 to schedule an appointment or looking through our listing of adoptable cats and kittens.

Today, our efforts are focused on caring for and placing cats since there is no other organization in Schuyler County addressing this need.  We provide spay/neuter services and emergency medical funds for dogs, but do not house or place dogs at this time.  Dogs are housed at the Schuyler County Animal Shelter and adoptions are handled by Friends of the Schuyler County Animal Shelter.

We are funded primarily through donations, gifts, grants and fundraising efforts. We receive no county, state or government funding for our on- going operation. Nor do we receive funds from national animal welfare organizations.  If you are interested in volunteering or making a donation please call us at 546-7710. We’ll put your skills or your donations to good use!

We hope you enjoy your visit with us. And, do check back often to see what we’re up to and how you can become a part of it!

Thank you.
